A Guided Prayer for Anxiety
A slow, step-by-step prayer for anxious moments: breathing, naming your worries, remembering God's faithfulness, and receiving his peace.
Philippians 4:6-7
When anxiety rises, it can be hard to know how to pray. Thoughts race, the body tenses, and words scatter. This guided prayer offers a gentle structure. Move through it slowly. There is no wrong way to do this.
If your anxiety feels overwhelming or constant, please also reach out to a trusted person, a pastor, or a healthcare professional. If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency services right away. Prayer and care belong together.
Step 1: Pause and Breathe
Find a place to sit, if you can. Place your feet on the floor. Take a slow breath in, and let it out even more slowly. Do this three times. As you breathe, you might silently pray: "Lord, you are here."
Step 2: Name What You Are Carrying
Tell God, as specifically as you can, what is making you anxious. You can speak aloud, whisper, or write it down. You do not need to tidy it up. God already knows, but naming it helps you release it.
Step 3: Remember One Faithfulness
Recall one time God helped you before, even in a small way. Or recall one thing you are grateful for today. Hold that memory beside your worry.
Step 4: Ask for Peace
Paul reminds us that we can bring our requests to God with thanksgiving, and that his peace will guard our hearts. Ask for that peace now. You do not have to feel it immediately. Simply ask.
Step 5: Rest for a Moment
Sit quietly for one minute. If your mind wanders back to worry, gently return to the phrase, "Your peace, Lord."
A Written Prayer
God of peace, my mind is racing and my heart is heavy. I bring you these worries: I name them, and I place them in your hands. Thank you for the ways you have cared for me before. I ask for your peace, the peace that goes beyond understanding, to stand guard over my heart and my thoughts. Help me take the next small step, and give me courage to reach out for help when I need it. I am not alone, because you are with me. Amen.
