A Guided Prayer for Someone Who Is Sick
A structured prayer for a loved one facing illness: for their body, their care team, their spirit, and for those who love them.
James 5:13-16
When someone we love is sick, we often feel helpless. Praying for them is one of the most meaningful things we can do. Prayer walks alongside medical care, never replacing it, and invites God into every part of the journey.
This guided prayer moves through several areas. Take your time with each one.
Step 1: Bring Them Before God
Say your loved one's name. Picture them, and imagine placing them gently in God's hands.
Step 2: Pray for Their Body
Ask God for healing, for relief from pain, for strength, and for rest. Be honest about what you hope for. God invites our requests, even as we trust him with the outcome.
Step 3: Pray for Their Care Team
Pray for the doctors, nurses, and caregivers involved. Ask for wisdom, skill, clear communication, and compassion. Pray for treatments to be effective and for good decisions to be made.
Step 4: Pray for Their Spirit
Illness can bring fear, loneliness, and discouragement. Ask God to give your loved one peace, courage, and a sense of his presence, especially in the long hours and hard moments.
Step 5: Pray for Those Who Love Them
Family members and friends carry heavy burdens too. Pray for their strength, rest, and wisdom.
Step 6: Offer Practical Love
Ask God to show you one concrete way to help this week, such as a meal, a message, a ride, or simply your presence.
A Written Prayer
Loving God, I lift up my friend to you. You know their body and their fears better than anyone. Please bring healing, ease their pain, and give them strength for each day. Guide the hands and minds of everyone caring for them, and let every treatment do its good work. Fill them with your peace and surround them with your presence. Strengthen their family and friends. Show me how to love them well. Whatever lies ahead, hold them close, and let them know they are not alone. Amen.
