A Guided Prayer in Grief
A gentle prayer for those mourning a loss. Make space for sorrow, remember with love, and rest in the God who is near to the brokenhearted.
Psalm 34:18
Grief is love that has lost its familiar place to go. It can arrive in waves, sometimes unexpectedly. There is no right way to grieve and no timeline you must follow. This guided prayer is simply a place to bring your sorrow to God.
Please be gentle with yourself. And if grief feels unbearable, or you find it hard to function day to day, consider reaching out to a trusted friend, a pastor, or a grief counselor. If you are ever in crisis, contact your local emergency services right away.
Step 1: Come as You Are
You do not need to feel strong or composed to pray. Come with tears, numbness, anger, or questions. Scripture says the Lord is near to those who have a broken heart. You are welcome exactly as you are.
Step 2: Speak Their Name
If you are grieving a person, say their name to God. Tell him what you miss. Share a memory, a habit, a laugh, a place. If your grief is for another kind of loss, name that too.
Step 3: Tell God the Hard Parts
Many psalms include honest lament: "How long?" "Why?" You can bring those questions to God. He is not offended by your honesty.
Step 4: Receive Comfort
Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Ask God for comfort today, not to rush your grief, but to hold you within it.
Step 5: Entrust Your Loved One and Yourself
As you are able, place your loved one and your own heart in God's care.
A Written Prayer
Lord, I am grieving, and it hurts more than I can say. Thank you that you are near to the brokenhearted. I bring you my loss, my memories, and my questions. Hold what I cannot hold. Comfort me in the long nights and the ordinary days that feel so empty. Surround me with people who will sit with me. I trust you with the one I love, and I trust you with my aching heart. Stay close to me. Amen.
