The Long Work of Forgiving Someone

Forgiveness is rarely a single moment. Ephesians roots it in the forgiveness we have received, and gives us room to walk it out honestly over time.

“And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 (WEB)World English Bible, public domain

Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful ideas in the Christian faith. It is also one of the hardest to live out. When someone has hurt us deeply, the call to forgive can feel impossible, even unfair.

Ephesians 4:32 is short and clear. But it does not ask us to forgive in a vacuum. It gives us a reason and a model.

Rooted in Our Own Story

"Just as God also in Christ forgave you." Forgiveness begins not with what others have done to us, but with what God has done for us. Before we are asked to extend forgiveness, we are reminded that we have received it.

This is not meant to shame us or minimize the harm we have experienced. It is meant to give us a place to stand. We forgive from a place of having been forgiven. We extend grace from a heart that has known grace.

When forgiving feels impossible, it can help to spend time remembering God's forgiveness toward us. Not as a guilt trip, but as a source of strength.

What Forgiveness Is Not

Misunderstandings about forgiveness can cause a lot of pain, so it is worth being clear.

Forgiveness is not pretending the wrong was not wrong. It does not mean saying, "It's fine," when it was not fine.

Forgiveness is not the same as trust. You can forgive someone and still decide they have not earned your trust again. Trust is rebuilt over time through changed behavior.

Forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation. Reconciliation requires both people. Sometimes it is not possible or not safe. You can forgive someone without restoring the relationship.

Forgiveness does not require staying in harm's way. If you are experiencing abuse, forgiveness never means staying in danger. Please reach out to a trusted person or local support services.

What Forgiveness Is

At its heart, forgiveness is releasing the debt. It is choosing not to demand repayment for the harm done to you. It is letting go of the right to revenge, and entrusting justice to God.

This is often a process rather than a single decision. You may forgive someone today and find the anger rising again tomorrow. That does not mean you failed. It means you are human, and you may need to choose forgiveness again. Many people find that each time they release it, the grip loosens a little more.

Kindness and a Tender Heart

The verse begins with "be kind to one another, tender hearted." Forgiveness grows best in soil like that. Hurt can make us hard, defensive, and cynical. Tenderheartedness is a quiet resistance to that hardening. It is choosing to remain soft, not naive, but open to grace.

If you are struggling to forgive, you do not need to force feelings you do not have. You can start with honesty: "God, I don't want to forgive yet. Help me be willing." That prayer is a beginning. God is patient with our process.

Talking with a pastor or counselor can also help, especially with deep wounds. Forgiveness is not something we have to figure out alone.

A Prayer

Merciful God, thank you for forgiving me in Christ. You know the hurt I am carrying and the person I struggle to forgive. I cannot do this in my own strength. Make me willing, and then make me able. Keep my heart tender without making me unsafe. Help me release this debt into your hands, and give me your peace. Amen.
